How to Get Natural, Authentic Photos with Your Kids
Let’s be honest—getting kids to “sit still and smile” for photos? Nearly impossible. And honestly, that’s not what I want for your session anyway. Some of the most beautiful, meaningful images come from the real moments—the snuggles, the giggles, the way your child looks at you with pure love.
If the idea of family photos makes you a little nervous (especially with little ones who have a mind of their own), don’t worry! Here are my top tips for getting natural, authentic photos with your kids—no forced smiles required.
1. Focus on Connection, Not Perfection
Forget the pressure of getting your kids to pose just right. Instead, focus on being present. Hug them, whisper something silly in their ear, twirl them around. Those small, in-between moments—when you’re simply loving on your kids—are where the magic happens.
💡 Try this: Instead of saying, “Smile for the camera,” try giving them a little tickle or telling them a joke. Natural smiles always win over forced ones!
2. Let Them Be Little
Kids are naturally curious, playful, and full of energy—that’s a good thing! Instead of trying to make them “behave” for photos, let’s embrace who they are. If they want to run, play, or explore, we’ll turn those moments into something beautiful.
💡 Try this: Bring a favorite lovey, blanket, or toy. Sometimes, a little familiarity helps them feel more at ease.
3. Move, Play, and Have Fun!
The best way to get natural photos? Keep moving! We’ll play games, go for little walks, and create moments that feel effortless. If your child wants to be silly—let them! Those real, joyful moments will make for the best photos.
💡 Try this: Give them a piggyback ride, spin them around, or snuggle them up close. Movement brings out the best expressions!
4. Keep the Energy Positive
Kids pick up on our energy, so if you’re feeling stressed, they will too. Try to go into the session with a relaxed mindset—knowing that I’ll take care of the rest! No need to worry if your toddler isn’t “cooperating” or if your little one is extra wiggly. I’ve worked with plenty of families, and I promise—we’ll still get beautiful photos.
💡 Try this: Instead of saying, “Stop doing that,” redirect their attention with something fun—like a game of “Who can give the biggest bear hug?”
5. Trust the Process (and Me!)
I know it can feel overwhelming trying to get everyone ready for photos, but once your session starts, just breathe and enjoy the moment. Let go of expectations and know that I’ll guide you the entire time. My goal isn’t just to take pretty pictures—it’s to tell your story in a way that feels real and meaningful.
