Planning a maternity session can be completely daunting. There is so much to consider.
The photographer, the dress, the location, it all can be so overwhelming.
You want that Pinterest worthy maternity session, and it isn’t as hard to plan as you think!
First and foremost you should find the perfect professional maternity photographer for you. That is my number one tip. You should not only look for a photographer that specializes in newborn and maternity, but the perfect one for you depends on their personality. You can learn a lot about a photographer by the facebook groups that they run and their website. Don’t settle with the first maternity photographer that you find, research each one. Take into consideration things that they offer, like prints, client closet use, session length, etc. This information is usually found on their website. Be upfront with them what your budget is for your maternity session as well as what you want out of your session, this will help them serve you best and they will be able to provide you with their collections that meet your budget, or they’ll be able to let you know right away they’re out of your budget.
Once you find your photographer, you should start planning the location and date for your maternity session. Typically I prefer to see my clients between 28 and 34 weeks. But every momma is different and so is every photographer. When considering a location, think about what you want out of your images. Do you want a lot of greens, do you want waterfront images? Your photographer should be able to help you nail down the location. We have lots of spots in our tool box. Dependent on the time of the year, your photographer might have some locations they advise not to use. TRUST THEM. There is a reason they are telling you this, its usually because that location may look stunning in the summer, but winter months is less than spectacular.
You might even want to base your location on what you’re wearing or vise versa. Many photographers, like myself offer extensive client closets. These client closets typically consist of multiple dresses that look spectacular at many various locations. This is something else that your photographer can assist with! If your photographer does not offer a client closet check out Sew Trendy and Accessories (that link gets you 20% off) they have gorgeous maternity dresses. Have your partner dress in a coordinating colored button down and khakis to complete the look! You photographer can also help you style your partner around a specific dress you choose from their offerings.
All the planning has come to an end and you are at the day before your maternity session! Drink lots of water, and try to get to bed early, being well rested for your maternity session will not only help you feel better, it will help that momma to be glow come out! Be prepared to wear nude under garments and make sure you have a strapless bra! Preferably one that is deep cut. Keep in mind the gown you will be wearing for your session. If its not already included in your session, professional hair and makeup is a great addition to your routine for the day. Plan accordingly and hire someone with experience with doing processional hair and makeup for photography sessions.
Lastly, relax and have fun. You hired someone who is there to support you and help you to feel beautiful, so LET THEM. Your photographer may ask you to do silly things or might make you feel a little awkward. Trust the process.
