As a maternity photographer, obviously my answer to this is…duh, but as a mother, my answer is still yes. Yes it matters, and having a photographer who specializes in maternity photography matters as well.

Maternity photography is important for a variety of reasons. The most important reason for me personally is because of how precious pregnancy is. I’ve shared my history of loss with you all before (although that should be a blog post for another day), and in that I’ve realized how important it is to document that time. And its important to remember that you are not just documenting a growing belly, you’re also documenting your growing family and thats just as important.

Maternity photography isn’t just holding your belly and smiling for the camera. It’s much more than that. And can really be whatever you want it to be. While I still stand by my recommendation of hiring a professional maternity photographer for your session, there are so many of us, with different styles and shooting technique. I personally shoot with storytelling in mind and with a moody style. During my sessions, you’ll not only get posed images, but also images with movement and emotion. Some photographers do not use poses at all, and others shoot only posed images. There is a maternity photographer out there for everyone!

Choosing to have a maternity session is certainly an investment, one that you might want to spend on newborn photography instead. And thats completely reasonable. Something to consider though, many maternity photographers offer a discount when you book maternity and newborn sessions together! This is great, not only that you’ll be able to save money, but also, using the same photographer will provide you with cohesive images editing wise, and photographers (Like me!) offer newborn wraps in the same colors of the gowns you used for your session!
